Chiggers (Trombicula spp.)
Chiggers are the microscopic larvae of harvest mites that attach to skin and inject digestive enzymes, causing intensely itchy red welts that can last for weeks. They are found in tall grass, brushy areas, and woodland edges, and are most active during warm months across the eastern and central U.S. Contrary to popular belief, they do not burrow into skin or suck blood, but their feeding causes significant discomfort. Lawn treatments targeting chigger-prone areas and personal protective measures reduce the risk of contact.
