Cutworms (Agrotis & Noctuidae spp.)
Cutworms are the larvae of several night-flying moths, named for their habit of cutting through the stems of seedlings at the soil surface, causing young plants to topple overnight. They hide in the soil during the day and feed on a wide range of vegetable and ornamental plants at night, making detection difficult. Some species also climb plants and feed on foliage, buds, and fruit. Soil-applied insecticides, surface baits, and protective collars around transplants provide effective protection for garden plants.
