European Fire Ant (Myrmica rubra)
The European fire ant is an aggressive invasive species spreading through the northeastern U.S. and Canada that delivers a painful sting and can form extremely dense supercolonies in lawns, gardens, and natural areas. Unlike the red imported fire ant, it prefers cool, moist habitats and nests under rocks, mulch, and in soil with abundant ground cover. High colony densities make outdoor activities unpleasant and even dangerous for sensitive individuals. Professional baiting programs combined with targeted mound treatments provide the most effective suppression.
