Elm Seed Bugs (Arocatus melanocephalus)
Elm seed bugs are an invasive species from Europe that has spread across the western United States, feeding on elm seeds and congregating in large numbers on the exterior of homes in summer before entering through cracks and gaps. Indoors, they are a nuisance pest that does not damage structures or bite, but their musty odor when crushed and sheer numbers are disturbing. Sealing entry points and applying exterior perimeter insecticide treatments in early summer before they begin seeking shelter provides the most effective control.
