Field Ants (Formica spp.)
Field ants are large outdoor ants that build conspicuous mounds in lawns, gardens, and along sidewalks, and while they rarely enter homes, their mounds can be unsightly and their presence can alarm homeowners. Some species can spray formic acid and bite when their colony is disturbed. They play an ecological role in aerating soil and preying on other insects. Targeted mound treatments and perimeter sprays effectively control field ant colonies in landscaped areas.
