White Grubs (Scarabaeidae larvae)
White grubs are the C-shaped larvae of scarab beetles including Japanese beetles, June bugs, and masked chafers that feed on the roots of turfgrass, causing large patches of dead, easily-lifted sod. Heavy infestations attract secondary pests like skunks, raccoons, and birds that tear up the turf further while foraging for grubs. Damage is most visible in late summer and early fall when grubs are near the soil surface. Preventive insecticide applications in early summer or curative treatments in late summer, combined with beneficial nematodes, provide effective suppression.
