Millipedes (Diplopoda)
Millipedes are slow-moving arthropods that feed on decaying plant matter and are primarily outdoor decomposers playing a beneficial role in soil health. They become a nuisance when they migrate into homes in large numbers during wet weather or seasonal changes, seeking shelter in basements, garages, and crawl spaces. While they do not bite or damage structures, they release a defensive secretion when crushed that can irritate skin and eyes. Removing moist mulch and debris from against the foundation and applying perimeter insecticide barriers effectively prevents indoor invasions.
