Pine Shoot Beetles (Tomicus piniperda)
Pine shoot beetles are invasive European bark beetles that have established in the Great Lakes region, where adults bore into pine shoots in spring and early summer, causing shoot dieback called flagging, and later mine beneath the bark of weakened or dying trees to breed. The shoot-feeding phase causes cosmetic damage, while bark-mining by breeding populations can kill stressed trees. Removing and destroying infested logging slash and dying trees, combined with pheromone-baited trapping, helps manage populations in forest and landscape settings.
