Spittlebugs / Froghoppers (Cercopidae)
Spittlebugs are the nymphs of froghopper insects that surround themselves with a frothy, spittle-like mass on plant stems as a protective cover while they feed on plant sap. They affect a wide range of ornamental plants, ornamental grasses, and strawberries, causing minor wilting and dieback at the feeding site. While unsightly, light infestations rarely cause lasting plant damage. A strong water jet to dislodge the spittle masses and knock nymphs off plants is often sufficient, with insecticide sprays reserved for heavy infestations.
