Springtails (Collembola)
Springtails are tiny, jumping insects named for the spring-like appendage on their abdomen that launches them into the air when disturbed. They feed on algae, fungi, and decaying organic matter and are generally beneficial decomposers in soil ecosystems, but become nuisance pests when they invade homes in large numbers, particularly in damp areas like bathrooms, kitchens, and basements. They are harmless — they do not bite, sting, or damage property. Resolving moisture issues is the most important control step, supplemented by targeted perimeter treatments for large invasions.
