Stable Flies (Stomoxys calcitrans)
Stable flies resemble house flies but are aggressive blood-feeders that deliver a sharp, painful bite, attacking livestock, pets, and humans around the legs and ankles. They breed in moist organic matter including wet hay, lawn clippings, and decaying plant material, and are a major pest in agricultural, coastal, and recreational areas. Their biting causes significant stress and blood loss in livestock and is highly disruptive to outdoor activities. Eliminating breeding sources through proper manure and organic waste management, combined with residual sprays, provides effective suppression.
