Boxelder Bugs (Boisea trivittata)
Boxelder bugs are black and red insects that feed on the seeds of boxelder, maple, and ash trees and become a nuisance pest in fall when they aggregate on the sunny sides of buildings seeking warmth. They enter homes through cracks and gaps and can overwinter in large numbers inside wall voids and attics. While they do not bite or cause structural damage, their large numbers and staining excrement make them unwelcome. Exterior perimeter treatments in early fall before they enter structures is the most effective control strategy.
