Lace Bugs (Tingidae)
Lace bugs are small, delicate-looking insects with intricate, lace-like wings that feed on the undersides of leaves of ornamental shrubs including azalea, rhododendron, and sycamore, causing a characteristic gray or white stippling on the upper leaf surface. Heavy infestations cause significant leaf discoloration, premature leaf drop, and reduced plant vigor. They are most problematic on plants grown in sunny, dry conditions. Targeted insecticide sprays directed at the undersides of leaves, where nymphs and adults feed, provide effective control.
