Phorid Flies / Humpbacked Flies (Phoridae)
Phorid flies are tiny flies recognizable by their distinctive humpbacked profile and tendency to run rapidly across surfaces rather than fly when disturbed. They breed in a remarkably wide range of decaying organic matter, from plumbing leaks and drains to decomposing organic material beneath floor slabs. Their presence is often an indicator of a plumbing leak, drain backup, or a concealed organic material problem. Identifying and eliminating the breeding source is essential — without this step, fly populations will persist regardless of other treatments.
