Pillbugs / Roly-Polies (Armadillidium vulgare)
Pillbugs are crustaceans, not true insects, that are closely related to lobsters and shrimp, and play a beneficial role in decomposing organic matter and enriching soil. They roll into a tight ball when threatened, giving rise to their common name roly-poly. Although entirely harmless, they become nuisance pests when they invade homes in large numbers, attracted by cool, damp conditions in basements and lower areas. Reducing moisture, removing decaying plant debris from against the foundation, and applying perimeter barriers effectively prevents indoor invasions.
