Root Weevils (Otiorhynchus & related spp.)
Root weevils include several species whose flightless adults notch leaf margins and whose soil-dwelling larvae chew on the roots and crowns of strawberries, ornamental shrubs, and container plants, causing wilting and plant death. The black vine weevil, strawberry root weevil, and woods weevil are common species encountered in gardens and nurseries. The larval stage causes more serious damage and is most effectively targeted with soil-applied insecticides or beneficial nematodes during warm soil conditions.
