Sod Webworms (Crambus spp.)
Sod webworms are the larvae of lawn moths that feed at night on grass blades near the soil surface, creating irregular brown patches in lawns that are often first noticed in midsummer. The adult moths fly in a zig-zag pattern over lawns in the evening, and their presence is an early warning sign of developing larval populations. Light infestations are tolerated by healthy, well-watered turf, while heavy populations cause significant patch damage. Targeted insecticide applications in late afternoon when larvae begin feeding provide the most effective control.
